An example of a Scots name in Assynt. The following is conjecture, but with a good basis. Nwton derives from the use of the Scots word " toun ", which is literally just a cluster of buildings , as in the common term: " ferm (farm) toun " for farm buildings or cottages. So it is probably a slight misreading by OS, or a slight misunderstanding of a Lowland term, presumably brought in with Lowland shepherds after the Clearances. (Noble 2016)
